Hodder Education: Rocket Phonics

Hodder Education has been established for over 150 years, designing and delivering pedagogically robust materials for students aged 4-16+.

The Brief

Seedling was engaged to create interactive content for Hodder’s ‘Rocket Phonics’ programme. We partnered with Hodder Education to create learning games that complemented the programme’s existing set of nine books.

Delivery

The solution for this project utilized a combination of our content development services and Seedling Generate. Hodder Education chose eleven games from our game template library which we adapted for the project. 
 
  • Our design team worked with Hodder’s art department to integrate the ‘Rocket Phonics’ book characters and illustrations into the templates. 
  • We built the first set of 11 sample games.
  • We consulted with Hodder’s technical team to accommodate any network limitations experienced by their school customers.
  • Together with Hodder we developed a project plan to deliver over 200 games.
 

End Result

Seedling and Hodder produced over 200 dynamic games for the ‘Rocket Phonics’ programme, on-time and within-budget. Hodder availed of our bespoke development services, and the use of our authoring platform for this project. The HTML5 games run on a web browser and are fast loading, even on slow school networks, and are compatible with all major devices. The games are securely stored within the Seedling authoring platform and are available to the Hodder team, to build upon or alter, at any time.

The ‘Rocket Phonics’ programme is part of ‘Reading Planet’ and is used by approximately 125,000 pupils in over 1,000 schools in the UK.

How Hodder Education created 200+ activities using Seedling Generate

We provided the Hodder team with ‘editor access’ to the Seedling authoring platform. Using the platform, a single team member set up 190 games in just under one month. Others in Hodder’s editorial team then edited and customized the games. The team shared, reviewed and approved the games over the course of two months. The games were then output as HTML5 packages and uploaded to the Hodder LMS by their IT team. Seedling continues to provide consultancy support to Hodder’s IT and content teams, who are benefiting from our experience in delivering these solutions.
